Native Plants for Hot Summers

It has been a busy summer with my first plant sale in June -- thanks to all of you who came out and supported Birds Nest Natives! Since then, I have been watering and working to keep my potted plants healthy. Like many gardeners and farmers, I have waited and hoped for rain during these summer months but it seems to be one dry stretch after another.

The wonderful thing about native plants is that many of them, once established, are able to withstand drought like the oxeye or false sunflower (heliopsis helianthoides) in bloom this week in my garden. Barbara Sullivan’s book, Climate Change Gardening for the Southeast is my new favorite native plant book with lists of natives particularly suited for drought. It inspires me during these hot months of summer, knowing the plants I am growing will require less water and will withstand the heat and drought of summers like this one.
